Outdoor Educator/Naturalist

Outdoor Educator/Naturalist – summer (3 positions) Supervisor Whitehouse Nature Center Director Salary $9.25 - $11.00 per hour based on experience Time Commitment Start around May 7, 2018 and work through mid August 2018; position based on 40 hours per week; daily hours may vary however it is mainly an 8 am – 5 pm shift; must be available Monday through Friday and some weekends/evenings. Job

Description Under the direction of the Director, develop, plan and conduct summer educational programs for the general public, local schools and scouts. Program topics will focus on science, historical and agricultural themes. Write lesson plans and press releases. Oversee nature center’s Facebook page. Assist in the daily operation of the Center. Assist in the care and maintenance of display animals. Oversee other student workers and volunteers. Assist/coordinate conservation projects – trail maintenance; invasive species removal; wildlife monitoring programs; landscaping. Training includes program design, leadership, natural history topics, group dynamics, public interactions, and general operations of a day-use, nature center. Ongoing training continues throughout the summer.

Qualifications Science or education background preferred General knowledge of the sciences and gardening but not required Basic knowledge of the flora and fauna of Michigan is desirable Experience working with youth Demonstrated genuine interest in children and enthusiasm for learning and teaching about nature in an outdoor setting Ability and desire to work with people of all ages in a pleasant, enthusiastic and appropriate manner Neat in appearance while on duty (representing the Nature Center and Albion College) Excellent verbal communication and public speaking Ability to work alone as well as with coworkers Valid driver’s license Working Conditions Be able to work indoors and in outdoor settings; exposure to different elements - wind, rain, heat, mosquitoes.
