Student Transportation Officer


POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Student Transportation Officer
Department: Campus Safety

Business Need and Justification
Campus Safety is responsible for providing transportation for students for a variety of personal needs.  The Campus Safety Student Transportation Officer provides for those needs through transporting students for medical, personal, and academic reasons, including driving the BritBus on its scheduled route. 
General Duties (all levels)
  • Provide transportation to students as assigned by a Campus Safety supervisor.
  • Drive the Britbus on its assigned route and schedule.
  • Report all transportation provided to Campus Safety dispatch so it can be recorded in the daily activity log.
  • When driving the Britbus, maintain an accurate count of passengers picked up or dropped off at each stop.
  • Conduct regular patrols of campus parking lots and report any suspicious persons or activity.
  • Assist Campus Safety staff as needed during emergency or hazardous situations.
  • Issue parking citations in campus lots when assigned to do so.
  • Train new Student Transportation Officers when directed to do so.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Train new Student Transportation Officers.
Job Specific Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:
  • Obtain a Michigan Chauffeur's License and operate a 15 passenger van safely.
  • Develop customer service skills through interaction with a diverse student population.
  • Effectively communicate with students, faculty, staff and visitors, as well as through two-way radio communication. 
  • Perform duties and responsibilities that meet expectations on a fixed schedule.
  • Recognize suspicious activity and report it to the appropriate agency.
  • Demonstrate their ability to assist in emergencies as needed.
  • Interact with first responders and other emergency response staff in an effective manner that provides for the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Students will be able to demonstrate the following Career Readiness Competencies (NACE Career readiness Competencies) through:
  • Demonstrate critical thinking/problem solving - The student will demonstrate this through managing expectations and requests for transportation that are made directly to the employee and determining whether they are appropriate and consistent with existing policies and procedures.
  • Oral/written communications -The student will demonstrate this through the experience of verbally interacting with students, faculty, and staff when providing transportation, and through effective communication through cell phone and the Campus Safety two way radio system.
  • Teamwork/collaboration - The student will work with a team of student employees, part time employees, and full time employees to help support the mission of Campus Safety and Albion College.

  • Professionalism/work ethic - The student will report to work on a fixed schedule, and understand that the campus community relies on their punctuality and ability to keep to a fixed route/schedule to receive the service they need.

General expectations & skills to be successful in this position:
  • Student needs to be able to be approved to drive College vehicles as per existing College policy.
  • Student needs to be able to obtain a Michigan Chauffeur's License.
  • Student needs to be able to report to work as scheduled and work their entire shift.
  • Student needs to be able to effectively and professionally communicate orally with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Student needs to understand the need for confidentiality of students who request service from Campus Safety.

Learning Outcomes Assessment:

Training
  • Training will normally take approximately eight hours.
  • Training will be provided by a Campus Safety staff member or current Student Transportation Officer.

Student employees must complete tax forms (W-4 Withholding Allowance Certificates) and proof of work eligibility (I-9) before beginning work as an Albion College Student Employee.
Completed forms must be delivered in person (bringing the required documentation) to the Human Resources Office which is located in 225 Ferguson. All forms should be completed in ink, not pencil and students should use their permanent address on all forms unless the permanent address is an international address.
